Project Description:
The Swine Project is an excellent 1st livestock project. We get the pigs in mid to late March; we have them 3 to 4 months. They are hardy animals & are free fed until the mid to late June time frame. If you are zoned for it, you may raise your pigs at your house. If you are not zoned for livestock, I have room for up to 8 pigs in our pig pen. (I take reservations.) If your pig is at my house, you will be expected to take care of it's needs.
The Swine Project is about 4 things...
1. Large livestock knowledge
Different breeds of pigs & their attributes, swine terms, pig facts & parts of the pig.
2. Swine husbandry & Swine Management Skills
Swine housing, proper nutrition, care & responsibility of your pig, disease prevention,
weight management, record keeping, how to train, groom & show your pig.
3. Marketing your animal
Write buyers letters & talk to potential buyers (friends, relatives, coaches, teachers,
family doctors, company representatives) who might be interested in supporting your
project.
4. FUN & a Successful Project
Once you have learned the proceeding 3 things you will have a successful project.
All that is left to be done is to have FUN showing your pig at the Orange County Fair.
