Project description:
This project is the longest and hardest, but the most rewarding project in 4-H (of course I’m biased). The skills you learn will help you become a more responsible and stronger person that will be valuable in your future with 4-H and latter in life. Your steer will make you a HERD LEADER!!
You’ll learn: why people raise beef cattle, how to feed and care for your steer, how to bond and love your steer, how to keep your steer healthy, the different beef cattle breeds, the normal behavior of cattle, the external parts of a steer, how to fit and show your steer, how to keep records and how to prepare for our steer competitions.
Age range: 14 to 19
Number of participants: 4 max. raising a steer. Others can join in as an educational beef project.
Meeting dates/times: 2nd Saturday of each month at 10am, more often as competitions get closer.
Meeting location: 7725 East Sandberg Lane, Orange, CA (near Villa Park Dam)
Competitions/Showmanship: up to 6 competitions
Estimated costs: Approximately $4000.00 for steer, grain, hay, tack and misc.
